Huskies Outfight USC To Advance To B1G Semifinal
April 24, 2025 | Women's Tennis
OJAI, Calif. – For the first time since the 2022-23 season, Washington has defeated USC, and the victory came at the perfect moment.
The third-seeded Dawgs (20-3, 11-2 Big Ten) defeated No. 6 seed Southern California 4-1 Thursday night in Big Ten quarterfinal action and will advance to play No. 2 seed Ohio State Friday afternoon.
This marks just the sixth time in program history the Huskies have won 20 matches in a season.
A match that was set for 6 p.m. began at nearly 7:30 p.m. PT for the Trojans and Huskies, their first night match of the season.
The Trojans took the doubles point but nothing else Thursday night, as Washington garnered the help of Reece Carter, McKenna Koenig, Carina Syrtveit, and Sophie Luescher who all secured singles wins.
Carter and Erika Matsuda traded spots in the top two positions of the lineup as Carter grabbed the first singles win for the Huskies with a win over No. 64 Emma Charney to tie the match up 1-1.
The Dawgs shut out USC in singles play with Syrtveit winning her match on six over Sloane Morra 6-2, 6-0.
Koenig once again left it all on the court against her former team, besting Lily Fairclough 6-3, 6-3 for her third straight win.
Luescher clinched the win for UW, with her match at No. 5 coming down to a second set tiebreak that she crushed, 7-2.
"Beyond happy and grateful for this team," Luescher said. "It feels like we are living the dream right now but we have a match again tomorrow and will keep riding this wave!"
Matsuda and Alexia Jacobs were midway through third sets after winning their second sets when Luescher clinched the match.
The Huskies face the Ohio State Buckeyes tomorrow for the first time this season in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal at 3 p.m. at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif.
