No. 2 UW Women Win All Seven Heats At Big Ten Championships
May 17, 2025 | Women's Rowing
INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 2-ranked Washington women's rowing team won all seven of its heats Saturday morning at the 2025 Big Ten Championships, held at the Indianapolis Rowing Center. On Sunday, the Huskies will seek their first crown in their new conference.
Saturday saw the 11 Big Ten programs race in either of two heats in seven race categories, with the top-three finishers from each heat qualifying for grand finals on Sunday. Washington was the No. 1 seed in all seven events.
Due to incoming bad weather, the original schedule was flipped and moved up an hour, meaning that the Huskies' I Eights (varsity eight) heat opened the morning's action.
In that heat, the Huskies faced Indiana, who raced at Windermere Cup in Seattle just two weeks ago. The Hoosiers gave the Huskies their biggest test as IU was the only crew that kept in touch with the UW shell beyond the first 500 meters.
By 1,000 meters, the Huskies had a full length on Indiana with the rest of the field well back. Washington coasted to a win in 6:25.602, more than eight seconds ahead of Indiana. Ohio State finished third to qualify for Sunday's grand final.
Washington went on to win all seven of its heats, all by open water over the second-place finishers. In fact, the Huskies held first place beyond the first 500 meters of all seven of their Saturday heats.
No. 7-ranked Rutgers, seeded No. 2 behind UW in five of the seven categories, was the heat-two winner in six of them, including the three NCAA events, the I Eights, II Eights and I Fours.
On Sunday, the conference championship is on the line with grand finals. Points are awarded for each of the seven categories, with more points awarded for the top events.
Here is the schedule (subject to change) for Sunday's finals, which will air live on Big Ten Network:
