COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Decorated sophomore twin vaulters Amanda and Hana Moll each secured trips to the NCAA Championships today, navigating the West Prelims field at Texas A&M's E.B. Cushing Stadium. The pair of indoor national champions will each be chasing their first outdoor NCAA title in two weeks' time.
On the second of the four-day West Prelims, the twins became the first UW women to punch their tickets to Eugene, which will host NCAAs from June 11-14. It was a great first day on the track for the Dawgs as well, as five women advanced from round one into the quarterfinals coming up on Saturday, where they can join the Molls and advance to the final site.
The Huskies went 4-for-4 in the women's 1,500-meters first rounds, as Amina Maatoug, Chloe Foerster, Sophie O'Sullivan, and Claire Yerby all finished in the top-three of their heats to advance, as the field was trimmed from 48 women down to 24. Stephanie Driscoll also reached the quarters in the women's 800-meters.
Molls Move On
With the large majority of the top-ranked women in the NCAA pole vault in the West, the Prelims competition today was going to be a tough test for the top-ranked twins, along with Avril Wilson in her Prelims debut. All five of the women to clear 15-feet outdoors this season were in the field, and two of those five would not make the cut today, but Amanda and Hana moved on for the second year in a row.
But the opening bar provided a tense moment for Hana, as she missed her first two attempts at 13-8 1/4 before exhaling after a third-attempt clearance. She then had a first-attempt make at 14-2 and cleared 14-6 on her second attempt. That was as high as the competition needed to go to shake down to twelve qualifiers.
Amanda cleared 13-8 1/4 on her first attempt, made 14-2 on her second, then had a first-attempt make again at 14-6 to lock up her spot.
Wilson got a third-attempt make at 13-8 1/4, just a centimeter off her PR from Big Tens, but she went out jumping at 14-2 and finished tied for 31st.
Track Action
Washington put all four of its 1,500m entries through to the quarterfinals, giving them one-sixth of the quarterfinalists on Saturday.
In heat two, Amina Maatoug locked in to the lead pack that broke clear and she cruised across the line in third for an auto-advancing spot in 4:17.16.
Next, Chloe Foerster got the win in the third of four heats, getting back in the groove after missing Big Tens. She ran 4:13.91 to advance.
Sophie O'Sullivan and Claire Yerby were both in the final heat. O'Sullivan, the Big Ten Champion, led mostly wire to wire, and rolled across the finish line in 4:13.81, just slightly faster than Foerster's time as they had the two fastest times of the day. Yerby threw up her fists in celebration as she crossed in third-place in 4:14.76 to make her first Prelims quarterfinal.
Later in the day, Stephanie Driscoll was part of a top-three that broke away in the final heat of the 800-meters first round. Driscoll, a Big Ten finalist, ran an even 2:06.00 to advance to Saturday.
The first Husky in action today was Sofia Cosculluela in the 100m hurdles. Cosculluela is qualified in the heptathlon, but got some good work done today in what will be the first event of that heptathlon in Eugene. She ran a season-best time of 13.45, moving her up to No. 4 in school history, though it would not advance to the quarters.
Last on the track was senior Maeve Stiles in the 10,000-meters. Stiles has made quick progress coming back into form after she missed the indoor season and the first half of outdoors. She returned at the Penn Relays, and only got her 10k Prelims qualifier two weeks ago at Big Tens. Stiles came in ranked 38th in the field but she moved up well throughout the race tonight and wound up placing 21st overall in 35:00.21.
Throwers Go Top-25
All three of the Husky women's throwers in action today finished in the top-25 in the West, but none were able to crack the top-12 to advance.
In the javelin, Leonie Troeger was 19th overall and Ashley Schroeder finished 21st. Troeger had a best throw today of 156-1, and Schroeder threw 154-6.
The shot put saw school record-holder Kaia Tupu-South place 18th overall. She had a best throw today of 52-8.
