SEATTLE – Down in Texas, the Huskies look to book return trips to Eugene this week, as the NCAA West Preliminaries will decide half the field for the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships. Washington has a combined 42 entries ready to compete this Wednesday through Saturday in College Station, as all athletes aim for top-12 finishes to extend their seasons to the final stage.
To reach this stage of the season, athletes had to rank in the top-48 in their event among all the teams in the west or east half of the country. Simultaneously this week, the NCAA East Prelims will go in Jacksonville, Fla. Twelve qualifiers in each event from the west and twelve from the east will make it to Eugene, Ore. where the outdoor championships take place from June 11-14.
The West Prelim schedule alternates days between men's and women's events, with the men starting things off on Wednesday, then the women getting going on Thursday. All the track action takes place in the late afternoon and into the evening. The first UW field competitors will start at 12:30 p.m. PT from Wednesday-Friday, then the first event Saturday will be the women's discus at 11 a.m. PT.
The 10th-ranked UW women have 16 women accounting for 18 entries, with Amina Maatoug and Kaia Tupu-South in two events each. Sofia Cosculluela will be competing in the 100m hurdles in College Station, but she is already qualified through to Eugene in the heptathlon, and will be looking for many teammates to join her. The men are bringing 22 athletes to contest 24 entries, as Jamar Distel and Evan Jenkins will do the 5k/10k double.
Every track event in College Station from the 100-meters up to the 1,500-meters will have two rounds; a first round that cuts the field from 48 to 24, and a quarterfinal that takes it from 24 down to the advancing 12. Longer races—the 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000-meters, and 10,000-meters—have just one round in College Station.
In the throws and horizontal jumps, all 48 athletes will simply have three attempts each to decide the advancing 12. Vertical jumps will continue to raise the bars until a top-12 is decided.
