Washington Women Win Windermere Cup Over Kiwis & Hoosiers
May 03, 2025 | Women's Rowing

SEATTLE – The Washington women's varsity eight won its 28th Windermere Cup and the Huskies swept all six women's collegiate events Saturday at the Windermere Cup/Opening Day Regatta on Montlake Cut.
Thousands lined the racecourse, aboard boats tied to the log boom, across the draw-span of the Montlake Bridge and along both sides of the Cut, as the UW men and women wrapped up their home and regular seasons with wins in all 11 collegiate races, including the featured Windermere Cup events.
The No. 3-ranked Huskies beat New Zealand, which won the third-ever women's Windermere Cup in 1989, and Big Ten rival and No. 16-ranked Indiana in the final event.
The three crews in the finale broke from the starting line in a tight bunch, and reached the 500-meter buoy with UW in front of Indiana by about a half of a length, with the Kiwis a relatively close third.
By the halfway point, New Zealand, which included former three-time All-America UW rower Ella Cossill, had moved into second.
Washington rowed to the win in 6:09.827, with about one-third of a length of open water back to second-place New Zealand (6:14.693). Indiana finished third in 6:25.655.

"We made excellent strides in all boats," said UW women's head coach Yasmin Farooq. "This was our third weekend of racing in a row, and every member of the squad was committed to strengthening each aspect of the race. It was so validating to have seven eights and four fours race at such a high level today. It was a true team effort across the board to win all events and push one another in front of an incredible Windermere Cup crowd."
"It was awesome," said UW sophomore Zola Kemp, a New Zealand native who rowed in the four seat in the Husky varsity crew. "It's definitely something I have never experienced before and it was so cool lining up against like these amazing women that I've looked up to so much."

The UW women had the top-two finishers in the women's Erickson Cascade Cup, with the Huskies' second varsity eight and novice eight taking first and second, respectively, ahead of the Indiana second eight and a crew from Seattle University. The Huskies' winning second varsity lineup included a trio of Kiwis – seven seat Olivia Hay, four seat Madeleine Parker and two seat Shakira Mirfin.
Washington also won the varsity four event (with Indiana second and another UW four in third), the second varsity fours, and the women's third, fourth and open varsity eight races.
"I always like look forward to Windermere Cup," said Kemp. "The entire Cut, you can't even hear the coxswain. She had to bang on the side of the boat in the sprint. It's just amazing. And then we row back up through [to return to the shell house], it's just incredible to see all the fans. You don't get this anywhere else in the world. It's incredible."
"The atmosphere was great," Farooq agreed. "Of course, Husky Nation showed up. Driving through the Cut, not only in the race, but also on the way back, you just really feel that everybody knows that this is Rowtown. USA. You see fans for all of the different colleges and clubs , and it really makes you feel the strength of this community and its support for the sport of rowing.

In two weeks, Washington will participate in its first-ever Big Ten Championship regatta, in Indianapolis. Two weeks later, the Huskies will row at the 2025 NCAA Championships, May 30-June 1 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
