Dawgs Power To Sweep Over Stony Brook
September 05, 2025 | Volleyball
DALLAS – Husky Volleyball led early, often, and by large amounts in its first sweeping win of the season today, as Washington handled Stony Brook 25-12, 25-6, 25-17 at Moody Coliseum on SMU's campus. The Huskies hit a season-best .442 and had a dominant 49 to 20 advantage in kills to earn their second win of the season.
Kierstyn Barton piled up 12 kills on 22 swings with just one error to hit .500, and freshman Simona Mateska had 9 kills on 19 swings without an error to hit .474. Katy Wessels tied her career-high with eight kills, hitting .385. Alexa Markley had seven kills in just two sets, hitting .455.
Sophomore Alexis Haury ran the efficient offense with 39 assists to go with nine digs. Zoria Heard had 17 digs along with three aces.
The first set was close until 7-5, when UW went on an 8-2 run and continued piling it on from there.
The second set was UW's most lopsided set victory under Head Coach Leslie Gabriel, and biggest win since a 25-4 victory in 2018 against Arizona State. UW had a 7-0 run on Heard's serve early, and then another 7-0 run on Wessels' serve to reach 21-5, then after one Stony Brook sideout, UW scored the final four points on Haury's serve. UW had 15 kills on 20 swings without an error in set two to hit .750.
Washington didn't let up in the third, scoring the first five points. Stony Brook got within one point at 8-7, but UW retook control with a 4-0 run and it was not closer than three points the rest of the way. Addy Benefield and Elise Hani helped close things out, as they started the third and combined for five kills.
Up Next: Washington wraps up its Dallas trip with a Saturday matinee, taking on Northern Iowa, a 2024 NCAA tourney squad, at 9 a.m. Pacific time.
