Nguyen Volleys No. 13 Huskies To Victory Over Iowa
October 08, 2026 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – On a special night in Seattle in which Mia Hamant's legacy was cemented in Big Ten history, Avery Nguyen's second half volley cinched a 2-1 victory for No. 13 Washington over Iowa for a second-straight win at Husky Soccer Stadium.
Earlier in the day, the Big Ten announced the honoring of the late keeper's memory, renaming the league's postseason laurel as the Mia Hamant Women's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Year Award.
With the Seattle skyline fittingly painted with an orange sunset, Washington celebrated Huskies for a Cure during the match, supporting the groundbreaking research at the Cancer Vaccine Institute (CVI) at UW Medicine. On the pitch, UW players wore individual jersey patches for the various cancer initiatives personal to them.
The victory keeps the Dawgs at pace in the Big Ten title race, sitting two points below the top of the table with a 5-1-1 league record, good for 16 points.
The three points were earned through a rough-and-tumble battle as the two sides battled evenly all match long, with Iowa leading in shots 10-8. Husky keeper Tanner Ijams protected her net with five saves on the night, all in the second half.
Alex Buck gave the Huskies their first lead on the night in the 31st minute with her third goal of the season, collecting a redirected square ball from Samiah Shell and burying a shot in the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 UW.
However, Iowa answered five minutes later to equalize as Sara Batchadji beat the Husky wall and Ijams with a direct free kick from just outside the 18.
The two sides remained all square after the first 45 and continued to tussle back-and-forth in the second half before Nguyen's breakthrough.
Maya Loudd got the attack started, darting down the right flank before pulling back and laying off to Ryan Boehm. The first year from Bellingham took a couple of dribbles before delivering a perfect cross into the box as Nguyen moved into open space, hitting the ball true on the volley in the 68th minute for the winner.
Up a goal, Ijams made a three highlight-worthy saves to deny the Huskies the equalizer and preserve all three points for the night.
Washington concludes its three-match homestand on Sunday, facing Penn State at 1:00 p.m. PT at Husky Soccer Stadium, streaming on B1G+. It will be UW's annual Down Syndrome Acceptance Match.
