March 09, 2026 | Men's Basketball
ROSEMONT, Ill. – For the second time in as many week, Washington's Hannes Steinbach has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office.
It is the German native's fourth selection of the season, the second most in the league. Steinbach has also reeled in USBWA National Freshman of the Week laurels twice this season.
Steinbach posted averages of 26.0 points and 18.5 rebounds while shooting 78.3 percent from the floor during the week. The rookie forward has tallied four straight games with 20-plus points, 10-plus rebounds and a shooting percentage of at least 65 percent, the first Big Ten player to do so in the last 30 years.
The freshman put on a game for the ages in UW's 91-72 victory over USC, racking up 22 points and 24 rebounds on Senior Day in Seattle, becoming the third Husky since 1977 with a 20-20 outing. Steinbach's 24 rebounds were the fourth most in a single game in program history, the most since 1972.
Steinbach followed with 26 points and 13 rebounds at Oregon, despite being limited to just 10 first half minutes due to foul trouble. With 22 points and 12 rebounds in the second half in Eugene alone, Steinbach has registered a double double in two of his last four halves of basketball.
The two performances bring Steinbach's season total to 20, the most by a Big Ten freshman since at least 1996-97. Steinbach's 12 20-point double doubles are tied for the most in the nation, with 10 coming against Big Ten opposition.
The No. 12 seed, Washington begins the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday, taking on 13th-seeded USC at approximately 11:30 a.m. PT at the United Center in Chicago. Wednesday's game will be available for streaming on Peacock and will air on NBCSN. Links to live coverage are available on GoHuskies.com.
