UW, Great Britain Win Twilight Sprints On Eve Of Windermere Cup
May 01, 2026 | Women's Rowing
SEATTLE – Great Britain won the featured race Friday at the Windermere Cup Twilight Sprints, the kickoff event for the Windermere Cup and Opening Day Regatta, which gets underway Saturday morning on Montlake Cut.
The Twilight Sprints, which were first run seven years ago, featured the crews that will compete in Saturday's women's Windermere Cup and Erickson Cascade Cup. The racecourse, roughly 650 meters, runs from the traditional start line to the east end of the Montlake Cut, finishing in front of the ASUW Shellhouse.
In the race featuring the Windermere Cup teams, the Canadians' fast start gave them the early lead, but Great Britain moved in front about halfway in. As they came to the finish, Washington's "Purple" entry surged to beat the Canadians for second, by two-tenths of a second. UW's "Gold" crew was fourth.
Washington's "Purple" entry won the first sprint of the night, beating a Washington "Gold" crew, and entries from Seattle University and Seattle Pacific.
The 40th Windermere Cup and Opening Day Regatta gets underway Saturday morning at 10:15, with the women's and men's Windermere Cup events capping the morning at 11:30 and 11:45 a.m., respectively. Live video of the regatta will air on Big Ten Plus, and also for viewers outside of the United States, at overnght.com.
