First-Years Get Feet Wet In Exhibition Win

SEATTLE -- Nearly two-thousand-strong Husky fans got introduced to some new Dawgs and reunited with some familiar favorites on Saturday afternoon in Alaska Airlines Arena. The Husky volleyball team won three of four closely contested sets against Oregon State in an exhibition match, with just under two weeks before UW opens its season for real on Aug. 28.
Set scores were 25-23, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21 for the home Huskies.
First-year outside hitters Sammy Destler and Kylie Kleckner, and first-year libero Kaitlyn Nguyen were tabbed for extensive action by Head Coach Leslie Gabriel today. Those three combined for every Husky service-reception in the match, and only gave up a pair of aces to the Beavers. Another new Dawg, second-year transfer setter Andrea Fabikovicova, was all over the court to earn 45 assists.
Destler led the Dawgs with 13 kills, while returning starting middles Katy Wessels and Julia Hunt each had 11 kills apiece. Maija Howse had nine kills, and Kleckner added eight.
Washington will have another exhibition outing next Friday, Aug. 21, against Montana State, then opens the regular season against UC Irvine on Aug. 28. Tickets are available now.
