SEATTLE -- Washington Volleyball looks to build on a strong opening week as it heads on the road for the first time, going to SEC territory for the Allstate Big Ten/SEC Challenge. The Huskies (3-0) visit Norman, Oklahoma and the McCasland Field House for the first time since 2015, where they will put B1G pride on the line against Ole Miss and the host Sooners.
All 18 Big Ten schools and all 16 SEC institutions will match up across various campuses throughout the week, culminating with a historic outdoor doubleheader at Wrigley Field on Sunday, September 6. The fourth team in Norman, and the other Big Ten squad, will be Ohio State.
UW faces Ole Miss first on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. Pacific/3 p.m. Central time. On Friday, Sept. 4, the Huskies and Oklahoma play at 12 noon Pacific/2 p.m. Central. Both matches will be live streamed on SEC Network Plus.
The Dawgs came out of the opening weekend with an unblemished record for just the second time in the past seven seasons. UW won its own Husky Invitational with three wins of all different lengths. A four-set win in the opener over UC Irvine; a sweep over San Diego State; and a five-setter to wrap the weekend over IU Indianapolis. Seven different players saw their first action as Huskies. Newcomers led UW in kills (Kylie Kleckner with 41), assists (Andrea Fabikovicova with 99), and digs (Kaitlyn Nguyen with 42).
Washington won two of the four Big Ten Player of the Week honors, after being shutout in the awards a year ago. Second year Maija Howse earned Defensive Player of the Week, after setting a career-high with 7 blocks against SDSU, then matching that one day later against IU Indy. She averaged 1.50 blocks per week as an outside hitter. Kleckner picked up Freshman of the Week honors after she led or shared the lead in kills in all three matches, while also handling primary serve-receive duties, hitting .269, adding four aces, 10 blocks, and 23 digs.
Ole Miss went 2-1 in its opening weekend, getting a five set win over Southeastern Louisiana, then a four set win over Northern Arizona, and a four set loss to Loyola Marymount. The Rebels play Ohio State on Wednesday before facing the Huskies. The squad was 14-15 last year and 4-11 in conference. Ole Miss was voted 12th in the SEC preseason coaches poll. Fifth-year Shayla Meyer led Ole Miss in the opening weekend with 70 kills, averaging 4.12 per set, and hitting .289. Cameron Bradley served up 9 aces, and averaged an impressive 5.82 digs per set. This is the first meeting between UW and Ole Miss.
The Sooners are 2-0, having swept Texas State and Louisiana last week. Oklahoma was voted 10th in the SEC preseason poll after going 16-11 last season and 7-8 in the SEC. Former Husky Elise Hani is with the Sooners for her fifth season, and had 15 kills over the first two matches. Oklahoma hit .350 as a team in the first week. Alaleh Tolliver and Alyssa Flack each averaged 3.50 kills per set. Tekoa Barnes had 6 aces in 6 sets. Washington is 4-0 all-time against the Sooners.
