Since joining Washington prior to the 2017-18 season, Thomas Sutton has helped Alan Murray return Washington to among the best programs in college golf, with the best still yet to come.Β
So far during Sutton's watch, the Huskies have produced one honorable mention All-American, two All-West Region golfers, four All-Pac-12 honorees and 11 All-Pac-12 Academic accolades. At the conclusion of the 2022, you can expect that list to expand.
The Huskies closed the fall of 2021 on a red-hot streak, winning their final two tournamentsΒ -- the Oregon State Invitational and Fighting Irish Classic -- while tying for first at their own Husky Invitational. Under the watchful eye of Sutton and Murray, RJ Manke turned in a historic fall where he finished no worse than third in five tournaments, and won twice. Manke has climbed all the way up to No. 6 in the PGA Tour University Rankings, No. 2 in Golfstat.com and No. 16 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. With such a strong fall, Sutton and Murray have the Huskies poised for a breakthrough spring in 2022.
Sutton did a masterful job of navigating two COVID-19 shortened seasons in 2021 and 2020. In 2021 the Huskies had three golfers earn All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention honors and finished fourth at the Pac-12 Championship.
The Huskies were poised for great things in 2020 before the pandemic hit. They won three tournaments and had two Pac-12 Golfers of the Month in Petr Hruby and Noah WoolseyΒ before college golf shut down. Woolsey was a PING Honorable Mention All-American and was joined on theΒ GCAA PING All-West Region team by teammate Henry Lee.
In Sutton's first year, he instructed Second Team All-Pac-12 Golfer Carl Yuan and helped him finish 16th at the NCAA Championships.
Sutton joined the Huskies from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he spent two seasons.
Prior to his coaching career, the Montgomery, Ala. native was a fixture on the Blazers' roster (2011-14), competing in 47 events throughout his career. Murray, who spent three years as an assistant and three as a head coach at UAB, coached Sutton throughout his college career.
Β
"I'm really excited to welcome Thomas to the Husky family," said Murray when Sutton was hired. "I've known him for seven years and he will be a great fit at the University of Washington. He played at an extremely high level on a successful college golf team and competed professionally. He's an accomplished player who will bring a ton of expertise, enthusiasm and a great work ethic to our program. Thomas is an excellent coach and will do a great job helping our guys become better people, students and golfers."
Β
In his first season as an assistant coach under Murray, Sutton helped guide UAB to its third straight appearance in the NCAA Championships. The Blazers earned their way to Eugene, Ore., by placing third at the NCAA Marana Regional in Marana, Ariz.
Β
His collegiate resume includes appearances in the 2012 Stanford Regional where he tied for 10th overall and led UAB to the NCAA Championships, 2013 Baton Rouge Regional (T-17) and 2014 Sugar Grove Regional (T-42) and NCAA Championships. He helped lead the Blazers to a second-place finish in the Conference USA Championships his senior year β the program's best C-USA Tournament finish since taking home gold in 2008.
Β
Sutton graduated from UAB in 2014 with a degree in accounting. As a student-athlete, Sutton appeared on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, was tabbed a UAB Student-Athlete of the Week multiple times, and became the first Blazer to be named to a C-USA All-Academic team (2012) since 2009. He went on to play professionally with the Hopkins Tour, National Golf Association and Web.com Tour following graduation.
