SEATTLE -- Reserve forward Tami Bennett scored twice and assisted on the other goal, leading Washington to a 3-0 victory over Washington State Sunday at Husky Soccer Field in the Pacific-10 Conference opener for both teams.
The Huskies improved to 4-6 while Washington State's record is 6-5.
Bennett opened the scoring within six minutes after entering the contest in the 29th minute. She headed in a corner kick from sophomore Caroline Putz from eight yards in front of the goal at 34:18.
Those two switched roles five minutes later as Putz scored at 39:21 on a 15-yard shot that was set up by quick passes from Bennett and Katey Ward.
Bennett capped the scoring at 50:46 on a 17-yard blast off a cross from Putz. Junior Theresa Wagner, whose pass found Putz alone on the left wing, was also credited with an assist on the final Husky goal.
Bennett has been a catalyst this season for the Huskies, accumulating four goals and three assists in the team's four wins while going scoreless in the six setbacks. The UW junior was the most prolific prep scorer in Washington state history, amassing 152 career goals at Seattle Christian High School.
Freshman goalkeeper Hope Solo, a product of Richland (Wash.) High School, posted her second shutout. She registered two saves for Washington which outshot the Cougars 19-9. WSU goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen made nine saves, including several on shots from point-blank range.
The Huskies continue Pac-10 play next weekend in Los Angeles. They play at USC on Friday and UCLA on Sunday.
