DENVER, Colo. - Sophomore forward Jake Sagare scored in dramatic fashion with 42 seconds left in double-overtime Monday to give the Husky men's soccer squad a 4-3 victory over Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival Denver.
Sagare took a long pass from junior Kai Carroll and slipped behind the Pioneer defense, which had moved up for a series of last-minute corner kicks. Left alone, Sagare drew Denver goalkeeper Parker Jarvis out of the net, chipping the ball past him for the game-winning goal and putting an end to a wild 120-minute back-and-forth battle consisting of 20 corner kicks and over 50 shots.
Pioneer freshman Nic Hartman made the extra time necessary when he sent a header into the Husky net in the 82nd minute. The game marked Washington's fifth overtime contest of the season, and its fourth in the past seven games.
Scoring first for the Huskies (7-4-2, 2-0) was junior Mark Hogenhout, who beat starting Denver netminder Nate Peery in the opening minute of the game to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Stingy defense held Denver (5-9, 2-2) to just two shots in the first 20 minutes of the game, but the Pioneers converted them both against Husky goalkeeper James Dickinson, who made just his third start of the season. A pair of goals by Carroll ended the first-half scoring, and set the stage for the late-game heroics by both sides.
Denver's 33 shots were 11 more than the previous season high for Husky opponents set by Gonzaga in a 2-2 season-opening tie, and marked only the third time this year that UW has been outshot. Likewise, the Pioneers' totals for goals (3) and corner kicks (10) established new 1999 Husky opponent standards.
The win moves Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger to 99-34-18 (.715) for his career. The eighth-year coach will look for win No. 100 in an MPSF matchup this Friday versus California at 1 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field.
