SEATTLE - The Washington men's soccer team clinched its second MPSF Mountain Division title today with a 4-0 shutout over Sacramento State at Husky Soccer Field. The four goals tied a season high for the Huskies, now 11-4-2 overall and 6-0 in the division.
UW opened the scoring at 41:44. Sac State's keeper, Joey Hills, was issued a yellow card for a handball outside the box, and sophomore Benjamin Somoza placed the ball perfectly over the wall and into the upper right corner of the goal. The Huskies' next score came at 70:15, when a Hornet-defender clear of a Somoza cross near the goal line deflected off a teammate and into the goal.
Junior Kai Carroll and freshman Zlatan Halilovic connected to score a pair of goals within 42 seconds of each other in the final five minutes of play. Carroll dribbled down and sent a short cross to Halilovic, who found the back of the net at 85:22, before Halilovic returned the favor to Carroll off a headed pass at 86:04.
Washington dominated play throughout the contest, holding a 25-3 shot advantage and 7-2 corner-kick margin. In fact, Sacramento State did not take a shot until the final two minutes of play. UW keeper Chad Olsen made one save to Hills' four.
"Our seniors are really stepping up," UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "This is a great way to clinch the division. They really had very few dangerous looks. It was all about sticking to our game plan. It's awesome for us to have a shot at back-to-back MPSF titles. We've won six of our last seven games and put ourselves in position to make the NCAA tournament."
With the win, the Huskies will host the MPSF title match on Wednesday, Nov. 10, against the Pacific Division champion. First, however, UW will host Oregon State next Sunday at 2 p.m. in a match that will be aired on Fox Sports Northwest on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.
