SEATTLE - The 15th-ranked Washington men's soccer team skated through MPSF Mountain Division play undefeated for the first time in school history this season after a 4-2 win over Oregon State Sunday at Husky Soccer Field. Senior Rees Bettinger registered his first two goals of the season on Senior Day to put the game away in the second half.
UW takes its 12-4-2 record and seven-match winning streak into the MPSF title game on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field. Washington will host No. 2 UCLA (16-1), which was undefeated in the Pacific Division after defeating No. 13 Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, in overtime today.
Junior Mike Casale scored less than a minute into the game, bouncing a direct kick off the wall and into the net at 0:55. The Beavers evened the score at 26:14, when Justin Kirk knocked in a rebound of a Scott Tedder shot. The first half ended at 1-1.
Junior Kai Carroll netted his seventh ball of the season at 62:04, heading in a crisp pass from sophomore Benjamin Somoza, who registered his seventh assist of the year. Bettinger then put the game-winner through at 75:30, booting in a throw-in from sophomore Greg Foisie. The pair connected again seven minutes later, passing the ball back and forth in front of the goal before Bettinger knocked it in for his 29th career goal. It was the second straight match in which UW has netted four goals.
Oregon State scored again at 88:03, as Tedder took a pass from Greg Howes and rolled the ball past UW keeper Chad Olsen, who played between the pipes the second half after senior James Dickinson performed the duties in the first period. Each made two saves, while OSU's Bryan Hill had six.
"We knew it was going to be a difficult game, knowing they throw so much forward," UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "Sometimes scoring a goal early is good, and sometimes it gives you a false sense of security. We knew they would come back. We made four substitutions in the second half, and Mark Hogenhout really made a difference in the second half. I had a feeling about Rees, and I couldn't be happier that his first goals of the season put the game away. We've won seven in a row, and with any luck we can keep it going. We're looking forward to a big game on Wednesday."
