No. 1 Huskies Score Eight In Sixth Inning To Down No. 11 Stanford

SEATTLE - The No. 1 Huskies exploded to score eight runs in the sixth inning to run-rule No. 11 Stanford before 1,313 fans at Husky Softball Stadium, improving to 49-5 on the season and 11-2 in the Pac-10 race. Stanford falls to 39-13 and 5-9. The two teams face off again Sunday at 1 p.m.
After just one hit for each team in the first five innings, the Huskies exploded for eight runs in the sixth frame, sending 10 batters to the plate. Jennifer Spediacci led off with a walk before Stanford pitcher Jaime Forman-Lau relieved Maureen LeCocq, and a sacrifice by Melissa Downs resulted in an error that put Downs on first and Spediacci on third. Christie Rosenblad was hit by a pitch, one of five times that occurred for the Huskies, to load the bases.
Erin Helgeland then sent a shot over the center fielder's head to score Spediacci and Downs. Rosie Leutzinger followed with another double, her 17th of the season, bringing Rosenblad and Helgeland home. After Kelly Hauxhurst and Jaime Clark were walked and hit by another pitch, respectively, Spediacci's three-run homer to center field ended the game early.
Spediacci struck out seven in the complete-game win, improving to 27-2 on the season. The shutout puts Spediacci at the top of the single-season list at UW, and her win total ties the record. Stanford's Maureen LeCocq fell to 6-4.
