SEATTLE - Four home runs, a grand slam and a run-rule game told the story at Husky Softball Stadium on Tuesday, as No. 1 Washington posted 7-0 and 10-2 wins over the Portland State Vikings. UW improves to 52-5 on the season and will take to the road to face No. 2 Arizona on Friday and No. 4 Arizona State on Saturday and Sunday. PSU falls to 21-33.
A six-run first inning set the tone for the nightcap during which Washington hit around, topped by a grand slam by Erin Helgeland. The first five Huskies in the lineup reached base safely before Helgeland's shot to left field. Rosie Leutzinger and Kelly Hauxhurst singled before a double by Jaime Clark sent Leutzinger home. A walk by Jenny Topping loaded the bases for Helgeland. It was UW's seventh grand slam of the season.
UW did not score again until the sixth frame, and four runs ended the game early. Helgeland, who went 3-for-3 in the game, singled and reached second on an error, and a double by Shannon Walsh brought Helgeland home. After Christie Rosenblad singled and Leutzinger was hit by a pitch, Traci Tawney's walk pushed pinch runner Jessica Bork home. Clark then doubled in Rosenblad and Leutzinger for the final 10-2 count.
Jennifer Spediacci (28-2) struck out nine in four innings before Walsh relieved her in the fifth. Spediacci's win total eclipses UW's single-season record of 27.
In the opener, Jamie Graves led off the second inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Rosenblad. Leutzinger doubled Graves home and then scored on Hauxhurst's single.
Two home runs highlighted in the fourth frame. Rosenblad sent her third ball of the season over the fence and her first at Husky Softball Stadium to lead off for UW. After Hauxhurst singled with a bunt, Topping homered for the 20th time of the season and the first time at home to make it 5-0.
Clark belted another dinger in the sixth, driving in Rosie Leutzinger, who had singled with a bunt. Clark hit for the cycle and went 6-for-8 for the day, adding a single in the second inning of the opener and a triple in the second frame of the nightcap. Graves went four innings and struck out six to improve to 23-3, and Bridget Wilcox relieved her in the fifth to pick up the save.
