SEATTLE - The USC baseball team, ranked No. 18 in the nation, ran its winning streak to nine games Saturday with a 13-3 win over Washington in a Pac-10 Conference game at Husky Ballpark.
Trojan starter Mark Prior fanned 10 and didn't walk a batter in seven innings of work to improve his season record to 8-6. The sophomore righty gave up only two runs on six hits for the win as USC improved to 37-18 on the year and 15-8 in the Pac-10. Washington fell to 26-29, 7-16.
Ahead by a 4-2 score, the Trojans broke the game open in the sixth inning, when they scored five runs on six singles and a hit batter. The first five USC batters in the inning singled to chase Husky starter Taylor Grant (2-6) from the game. The Trojans tacked on four more in the eighth, including two on a home run by national freshman of the year candidate Anthony Lunetta, his eighth of the season.
Every USC starter, and two reserves, posted a hit. Rob Garibaldi led the way with three singles in five at bats and Abel Montanez and Justin Gemoll each finished up with two hits and three RBI.
Freshmen Jay Garthwaite and Bryan Johnson were the only two Huskies with more than one hit, with two each. Garthwaite's double to the wall in the eighth drove in a run. Tyler Davidson and Ed Erickson each had RBI singles to account for the other two Husky scores.
Washington closes out the 2000 season Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as Ed Erickson, the only senior on the Husky roster, will play his final game. Erickson, with 42 career round- trippers, is the Huskies' all-time leading home run hitter. Game time is 1:00 p.m., not 6:30, as has been reported.
