Seattle - The Washington men's soccer team posted a 2-1 victory over the University of California, Irvine to win its home opener in front of 544 fans on hand for the Nike Northwest Soccer Challenge at Husky Soccer Stadium Thursday night.
The Huskies, who have won three in a row, improve to 3-2-0 while head coach Dean Wurzberger picked up victory No. 110 in his ninth year at Washington. Irvine suffered its first loss of the season and dropped to 4-1-0.
The Huskies tallied a pair of goals in the first half of the game to take the early lead. Junior Greg Foisie (Clovis, NM) connected on an unassisted shot from the right side of the goal at 13:53 to score first. Bryn Ritchie (Medford, Ore.) closed the first half with a header off a cross from Ben Somoza (Edmonds, Wash.) at 42:27.
Irvine's Jon Spencer put the Anteaters on the board at 66:05 with a low line drive from the right side. The visitors had their chances in the closing minutes of the game but could not convert to even the score.
"This was a tough game," said Wurzberger. "Irvine came in undefeated and with a lot of confidence. They played a high energy game and kept the tempo up. After our two goals in the first half, we told our team to stay strong on defense and add to the lead. Irvine got fired up by its goal and it was a nervous finish for us. Credit our guys, they held on and didn't let them get the equalizer."
Santa Clara won the first game of the tournament, 1-0, over Oregon State. Action continues Saturday afternoon with Oregon State and Irvine playing at 12 noon, followed by Washington and Santa Clara at 2:15 p.m. Both games are at Husky Soccer Stadium.
