Omaha, Neb. - The 12th-ranked Washington men's soccer team suffered an upset in its 2000 season opener, losing 2-0 to 21st-ranked Creighton in the first round of the Diadora Challenge in front of 1,078 fans at Tranquility Park Saturday night. The game started half an hour late after officials cleared the field when lightening swept through the area.
Creighton, also playing its season opener, scored a pair of goals in the first half to register the victory. The Bluejays got on the scoreboard early when Brian Mallon connected on a shot from 14 yards out at 8:53 into the contest. The second goal came on an unassisted shot at 34:04.
Washington outshot the Bluejays, 20-11, but it was not enough. Junior captain Bryn Ritchie led the Husky attack with four shots, followed by Jake Sagare with three and Ben Somoza and Zach Kingsley with two each. Chad Olsen had three saves in goal for Washington, while Creigton's Mike Gabb registered six saves.
Washington plays its second game of the tournament against No. 13 Southwest Missouri State at 5 p.m. PST, Sunday.
