EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 7 Washington battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 6 Michigan State on Friday. The Huskies move to 8-3-3 and 4-1-2 in Big Ten play.

Michigan State struck first, scoring on their third shot of the match in the 27^th minute.

The teams were even across the first 45 minutes of play, with the Spartans holding a slight edge in shots at 4-3, and Washington in front in corners at 2-1.

The Huskies punched back with an outstanding free kick goal from Zach Ramsey 10 minutes after the restart. Washington's star striker curled in his shot from just outside the penalty area, scoring his second direct free kick goal of the season.

His 17 goals tie him with David Berto (1989) for the third-most goals in a season in program history. It's been 39 years since a Husky has scored more goals than Zach Ramsey, as the two players ahead of him in the record book are record holder Craig Beeson (1987 – 19), and No. 2 on the list, Ken Garrett (1973 -18).

Washington was on the front foot for much of the second half until Harrison Bertos received a second yellow card in the 75^th minute. The Huskies brought in defenders Gabe Fernandez and Shaun Brun and took a defensive approach coupled with aggressive counter attacking play for the remainder of the match.

Zach Ramsey took a counterattack nearly into the Spartan box before a last-ditch tackle stopped his run short of getting a shot of in the final minutes.

Shaun Brun made a critical stop in the closing seconds of the match, sending a Spartan shot away from the goal to secure the draw for Washington.

Stockton Short, Egor Akulov, Asher Hestad, Zach Ramsey, Alex Hall, Zack Meier, and Connor Lofy each played the full 90 minutes in the match. Osato Enabulele chipped in 69 minutes as a substitute while Emmett Layman had 40 minutes off the bench.

Washington continues its Michigan road trip against the Wolverines on Monday afternoon.
