SEATTLE - In a battle between two teams looking for their first conference win, the visiting Washington State Cougars, behind outside hitter LaToya Harris' 21 kills, defeated host Washington 15-2, 15-7, 15-13, Friday in volleyball action at the Hec Edmundson Pavilion Addition. With the loss, the Huskies fell to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in the Pac-10, while the Cougars improved to 10-4 and 1-4 in conference play.
Friday night's match was the 2000 home debut for UW quick hitter Lisa Underhill (Vista, Calif.) who recorded 17 kills, while senior opposite Emily Seacat (Ridgefield, Wash.) added 10 kills. Junior Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) led the Husky defense with 10 digs.
In game one, the Cougars raced out to a 6-1 lead and then scored eight unanswered points to win 15-2. The second game proved more competitive as the two teams hung close until a kill by Washington State's Chelsie Schafer broke a 7-7 tie. The Cougars did not relinquish the lead, claiming game two 15-7.
In game three, the Huskies were once again down 5-2 until junior Kiki Maroutsos (Mission Viejo, Calif.) came off the bench to spark the Huskies, reeling off four straight points to take the lead at 6-5. WSU batted back once again to regain their lead, finally taking command of the game at 12-7. The UW had a late run, however, tying the match at 13-13 after being down in the game by as many as five points. The Cougars pushed into the lead at 14-13, before Underhill was blocked to end the match.
In addition to Harris' 21 kills, WSU got 16 kills from Chelsie Schafer and a double-double from Zanda Bautre (12 kills, 11 digs).
Washington will have a few days off before heading to Northern California for Pac-10 matches versus California Friday and Stanford Saturday.
