STANFORD, Calif. - For the second straight day, No. 1 Stanford's pitching staff made short work of the Washington baseball team as two pitchers combined to hold the Huskies to only three hits as the Cardinal shut out the Huskies, 9-0, in a Pac-10 game Saturday at Sunken Diamond.
Starter Jeff Bruksch (5-0) allowed three hits and a walk while fanning nine in seven innings. The junior has allowed only two earned runs over his last 37 innings. Ryan McCally pitched the final two innings for the Cardinal. All three Washington hits -- two from Jay Garthwaite and one from John Otness -- were singles. Washington hadn't suffered a shutout since the 1999 season.
Stanford got on the scoreboard first when Jason VanMeetren belted a two-run homer, his third of the season. In the fourth, the Cardinal made it 3-0 when Scott Dragicevich doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Brian Hall.
The Cardinal broke the game open for real in the fifth, scoring four runs. Stanford took advantage of four singles, two Husky errors, a walk and a wild pitch during the inning, chasing Husky freshman starter Clay Johnson in the process.
Johnson, a righty from Elma, suffered his first collegiate loss to fall to 3-1. He gave up five earned runs on eight hits over four-plus innings.
VanMeetren, Sam Fuld and Carlos Quentin all finished the game with three hits for the Cardinal.
The Huskies and Cardinal close out the three-game series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. The game will air live on KSRB AM-1150 and on www.1150ksrb.com.
