Reynolds, Rittenhouse Lead UW Past OSU

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Shortstop Tila Reynolds went 2-for-4 and made several outstanding defensive plays to help the Washington baseball team beat Oregon State, 10-7, in a non-Pac-10 game Tuesday at Goss Stadium. The two teams play a three-game conference series later in the spring in Seattle.
Reynolds, a sophomore from Renton (Liberty High), was playing for the first time against younger brother Kerisi Reynolds, the Beavers' freshman second baseman. The Huskies' Reynolds had a home run, a double, a walk and two RBI and dove twice to snag line drives. Senior Marc Rittenhouse went 3-for-4 with two doubles and stole home on a straight steal in the eighth to help the Husky cause.
The Huskies (6-2) jumped on OSU starter Paul Williams (1-1) in the first. After Rittenhouse led off with a double, Reynolds hit his second homer of the year over the left field fence. A single and a walk later, Tyler Davidson drove in a run with a single and Williams was relieved by Ben Rowe, who gave up a two-run double to Jefferson Thiel that staked the UW with a 5-0 lead.
The Beavers (8-8) responded quickly, however, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. OSU loaded the bases on two singles and a hit batter when Brian Barden bounced what looked like an inning-ending double play ball towards second base. But the ball skipped past Rittenhouse, allowing two runs to score. A single from Andy Jarvis drove in a third run before a line drive double play ended the inning.
Reynolds struck for the Huskies again in the second as he doubled off the wall in left- center and scored on a Jay Garthwaite single to give Washington a 6-3 edge. In the fourth, the Huskies extended the lead to 9-3 when Bryan Johnson belted a three-run homer off the scoreboard in right field.
After a two-run homer from OSU's Josh Carter and Rittenhouse's steal of home left the score at 10-5, the Beavers threatened in the eighth. Seth Pietsch led off the inning with a solo homer off of UW reliever Mike Bomar, who had thrown 10 scoreless relief innings this season. After another run had scored, reliever Shawn Kohn got a strikeout and a groundout to leave the bases loaded.
Zack Daniels (1-0) threw five innings for the victory. Sophomore Scott Robertson recorded the final three outs of the game for his third save of the year. Williams threw only a third of an inning in the loss.
The Huskies and Beavers continue the brief, two-game series Wednesday with another 2:00 p.m. game.
