FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Shawn Kohn carried a no-hitter through five and one-third innings and worked a three-hit complete game to lead Washington to a 5-1 win over Fresno State Friday night at Beiden Field.
Kohn, a right-hander from Woodinville, walked one in the second and hit a batter in the fifth, but didn't allow a hit until there was one out the sixth, when leadoff hitter Chris Patrick bounced a chopper to third and beat out the throw to first. Second baseman Scott Beshears followed Patrick with a clean single to center field.
With two out in the eighth, the Bulldogs avoided the shutout as Patrick drove a pitch off the left field foul pole for a solo home run. Kohn finished having allowed only the three hits while striking out eight and walking one.
Kohn (2-0), who threw five shutout innings last week in a win over Missouri on opening day, has thrown 14 innings this season, allowing only six hits, one walk and one run.
"Shawn was vintage Kohn tonight," said UW coach Ken Knutson. "He had great command all night. He threw the fastball and the curve for strikes and he made them hit a lot of balls to our defense."
Washington jumped on struggling FSU ace Bob Runyon in the first, touching the preseason All-American for five runs. After a sacrifice fly by first baseman Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) plated one run, sophomore DH Steve Ramsey (Redmond/Eastlake) singled to score another.
Junior Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) followed with a three-run homer, his first of 2002, over the scoreboard in left field to give the Huskies a 5-0 edge after half an inning.
Runyon settled in quickly after the rough start, allowing only two hits over the next eight innings. He nonetheless suffered the loss, falling to 1-3 on the season in a complete-game effort.
The Huskies and Bulldogs continue the three-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
