SEATTLE - Junior Jay Garthwaite belted two triples and a home run and fell a double short of hitting for the cycle to lead the Washington baseball team to a 15-8 win over Brigham Young Thursday at Husky Ballpark in the first game of a three-game series.
The Huskies (9-7) had just surrendered a 4-0 lead, allowing five runs in the top of the fourth, but sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning. With four runs already in, Kyle Larsen (Redmond/ Eastlake), Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) and Garthwaite connected on back-to-back-to-back triples. Garthwaite tacked on a solo homer in the sixth and in the eighth, needing a double to become the first Husky since 1994 to hit for the cycle, he belted his second triple of the game off of the center field wall.
Husky ace Shawn Kohn (Woodinville) improved to 5-0 with the victory despite easily his weakest outing of the year. Kohn allowed eight runs over eight innings after entering the game with a 0.90 earned run average. The senior righty struck out four and didn't walk a batter.
Washington went in front in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs. Sophomore Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen), making his second career start and first appearance of the year in a shuffled Husky lineup, belted a two-out, bases-loaded double to the left-center gap, his first career hit.
The Huskies scored another pair in the third when Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) walked and Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) singled. They stole second and third base and then scored on a groundout from Larsen and passed ball.
The Cougars, however, went in front with five runs in the fourth as Kohn suffered through his roughest stretch of the year. Kohn had given up only three runs over 30 innings prior to Thursday's game, but surrendered a single, a double, a triple and a two-run homer to Dave Jensen in the inning. Matt Carson's triple drove in a run to open the scoring and Jake Stubblefield hit a two-run double.
BYU starter Jeff Stone (0-3) threw three-plus innings in the loss as BYU, fresh off a three-game sweep of UNLV, fell to 8-12 on the season. Jensen, who went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in, his his second homer of the game in the eighth.
The Huskies and BYU return to action Friday in a 3:00 p.m. game (originally scheduled for 6:30 p.m.). Saturday's series finale starts at 1:00 p.m.
