SEATTLE - For the first time since 1983, a Washington baseball game ended in a tie Saturday as the Huskies and Brigham Young were able to complete only eight innings due to BYU's travel plans. The game at Husky Ballpark ended in a 12-12 deadlock and the series ended with one win and a tie for each team.
The Huskies (9-8-1) got a two-out pinch-hit single from sophomore Steve Ramsey (Redmond/Eastlake) in the bottom of the eighth to salvage the tie after giving up three runs in the top of the eighth inning to give up an 11-9 lead.
The game was a see-saw battle throughout. The Cougars (9-12-1) took advantage of two Husky errors to score six runs in the top of the second inning before the Huskies scored six of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the game. BYU went ahead 7-6 on Matt Carson's solo homer in the fourth, but an RBI single from Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent- Meridian) in the bottom of the inning squared the score again.
In the sixth, BYU posted two more on a run-scoring single from Lars Birkeland a solo homer from Doug Jackson, but Garthwaite, who finished 3-for-4 with five runs batted in, put the Huskies in front 10-9 with a two-out, three-run homer in the sixth. After an 11th Husky run in the seventh gave the UW an 11-9 lead, BYU scored three in the eighth, going ahead when an attempted double play throw to first from shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) went wild, allowing Cameron Coughlan to score from second base.
Garthwaite, who fell a double short of hitting for the cycle in Thursday's series opener, did so again, posting a single, a triple and a home run. In the eighth, needing the double, his line drive down the line was knocked down by third baseman Jake Stubblefield, who stepped on third for a force out.
UW starter Sean White (Mercer Island) lasted only one and two-thirds while BYU's Jacob Chrisman worked only an inning and one-third in the start.
Jackson went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBI to lead BYU.
The Huskies take the next week off for finals before going to Pullman March 25-26 for a pair of non-conference games at Washington State. The Pac-10 season begins two days later when Washington begins a three-game series at Arizona State.
