COLUMBIA, Mo. - Designated hitter Cody Ehlers belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th to lead the Missouri baseball team to a 5-3 win over Washington Saturday in a non-conference game at Taylor Stadium.
The Tigers got their 12th inning rally started when, with one out, W.T. Hoover reached on an error. Husky closer Tyler Shepple (Arvada, Colo.) worked the count full before Ehlers lofted a ball the opposite way and over the left-field fence to end the game.
Washington (12-14-1) has now lost five in a row while Missouri improved to 13-16. Shepple (0-1) took the loss after entering the game to start the 11th. MU closer Travis Wendte (2-1) threw three and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief for the victory.
After Missouri scored a run in the second on an RBI double from Jody Roughton, Washington posted a run in the third on a run-scoring single from Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian).
Washington went ahead in the fourth when Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) scored from third on a squeeze bunt from catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River), but the Tigers tied it at 2-2 on Mick Weiss' leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth.
With one out in the fifth, Garthwaite belted his 10th home run of the year, a solo blast over the scoreboard in left, to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead, but the Tigers tied it back up quickly as catcher Brent Lacy doubled and eventually scored on a groundout.
Washington starter Shawn Kohn (Woodinville) threw 10 innings, but didn't get a decision. The senior righty allowed nine hits and three runs while striking out six and got out of a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the 10th before retiring.
The Huskies and Tigers wrap up the three-game set Sunday at noon CDT (10 a.m. PDT). Audio and video coverage of the game is available on the internet at www.gohuskies.com.
