SEATTLE - Five Husky pitchers -- including freshmen David Dowling, Will Fenton, Jamie Hawkins and Josh Conover -- combined for a six-hit shutout as the Washington baseball team blanked Portland, 10-0, Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark in the first game of a two-game, non-conference series. The last time the two teams faced eachother on March 2 of this season, the Huskies also won, 10-0.
Dowling, from Kirkland's Juanita High, picked up the win, allowing two hits and striking out four in a four-inning start. Fenton (Kingston/North Kitsap) gave up a single in two innings of relief and Bainbridge Island's Hawkins struck out two in one, no-hit inning. Conover, from Lake Washington High, gave up a single in the eighth and junior Tyler Shepple (Arvada, Colo.) closed out the game with a one-hit ninth.
The Huskies (23-20-1) got the scoring started in the first. A leadoff double from Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen) and a single from Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) put runners at first and third for freshman Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake), whose sacrifice fly drove home Isaacson.
After Hathaway stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch, DH John Otness (Tacoma/Wilson) made it 2-0 with a double. Only a tremendous diving catch for the third out by Pilots center fielder Trevor Hahn on a line drive from Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) ended the rally.
The UW tacked on another three runs in the second. Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) walked and eventually came around on a single from Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty). Reynolds stole second and then scored when shortstop Travis Hanson threw wild trying to throw out Hathaway at first. Hathaway moved to second when the errant throw reached the dugout and then scored to make it 5-0 when Larsen singled through the right side.
Back-to-back, two-out doubles from Larsen and Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) off of UP reliever Matt Coleman led to a sixth Husky run in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Garthwaite and freshman right fielder Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview) connected for solo homers off of Hahn, who moved from center field to throw one inning of relief, to give the UW a 8-0 lead.
Larsen, who finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, hit his second two-bagger in the sixth and then came around on another hit from Davidson, this one a single, as the Huskies stretched their lead to 9-0. A bases-loaded walk to Brandon Jacobson (Issaquah) in the ninth capped the UW scoring.
Portland starter Brule Speck (1-2) worked only two innings in the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits. The Pilots fell to 21-24 on the season. Hahn led the Pilots' offense with two of his team's five hits.
The Huskies take on Portland again Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. before heading to Los Angeles to take on USC in a big three-game Pac-10 series Friday through Sunday.
