SAN DIEGO - Keaton Everitt allowed only two hits and one run in his first college start to lead the No. 23 Washington baseball team past San Diego, 13-3, Sunday in the final game of the Huskies' season-opening series.
Everitt, a redshirt sophomore who only began to pitch during his senior year at Juanita High, had thrown only three college innings prior to Sunday's game. The lone run he allowed came via a popup that was lost in the sun and fell in for a double, one of only two hits he surrendered. He walked three and struck out two.
Washington finished its opening weekend with a 2-1 record while the Toreros fell to 4-8.
For the third time in three games this season, Washington got a solo homer in the first inning to get the scoring underway. Brent Lillibridge, who hit a leadoff homer in Friday's season opener, hit the first pitch of Sunday's game out to left field for his second homer of the season.
In the bottom of the first, USD tied the score when leadoff hitter Tom Caple walked and, after two outs, scored when UW second baseman Greg Isaacson lost a popup from Torero catcher Josh Hansen in the sun, allowing Caple to score all the way from first base.
Washington, however, took back the lead in the second. With one down, Taylor Johnson reached when his high pop to center went in and out of Caple's glove for an error. Nick Batkoski followed with a single to put runners at the corners and senior second Greg Isaacson doubled to left to drive in Johnson. After a second out, John Otness reached on an infield single to increase the UW lead to 3-1.
The Huskies broke the game open in the third, scoring four times. With one run already in on a Taylor Johnson sacrifice fly, Isaacson belted his second double in as many innings to send home another. After USD starter Justin Blaine was relieved by Brian Jones, Lillibridge lofted a single to right, driving home another pair and giving the UW a 7-1 lead.
Washington erased any doubt about the outcome with five runs in the eighth. John Otness doubled to score two runs and sophomore Curt Rindal drove in Otness for a third. Freshman Brett Kilborn, from Ballard High, drove in a run with a single in his first college at bat and junior Taylor Johnson plated the fifth run of the inning with a double.
In the ninth, true freshman outfielder Nick Jiles (Yakima/Davis HS) led off the inning with a homer in the first at bat of his career.
Blaine (1-2) allowed five earned runs on seven hits over two and two-thirds innings for the loss. UW junior reliever Joel Villalobos, who sat out with an injury last season after transferring from Bellevue CC, threw two no-hit innings of relief. Freshman Kyle Parker threw a no-hit eighth inning, and the Huskies were combining on a two-hitter until the ninth, when USD scored two unearned runs on three hits and an error.
Lillibridge went 3-for-5 with three RBI on the day while Isaacson, Otness and first baseman Kyle Larsen each finished the game with two hits to lead the Huskies.
Next up, the Huskies play their earliest-ever home series next weekend when Gonzaga comes to Husky Ballpark for a three-game series next Friday through Sunday.
