
Hathaway Homer Sinks Gonzaga, 4-3, In 11

SEATTLE - Junior Aaron Hathaway homered to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning, breaking a 3-3 tie and leading the No. 23 Washington baseball team to a 4-3 win over Gonzaga Saturday at before a crowd of 1,052 fans at Husky Ballpark.
The win was the fourth straight for the Huskies (4-1), who opened the year with a loss at San Diego. Gonzaga fell to 2-4 on the season.
UW senior reliever Trent Baysinger (1-0) retired all 11 batters he faced, working three and two-thirds innings for the win. Gonzaga lefty John Gonzalez, who'd held the UW scoreless through his first two and one-third innings of relief, gave up the homer and suffered the loss to fall to 0-1.
Washington had trailed 3-0 after five and a half innings. UW freshman starter Tim Lincecum, who had held the Zags hitless through the first four innings, gave up a single and three walks to force a runner home in the fifth. In the sixth, GU center fielder Chris Sinner drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single to chase Lincecum.
In the bottom of the sixth, Washington got on the scoreboard when senior second baseman Greg Isaacson belted a one-out solo home run. In the seventh, Washington loaded the bases for right fielder Nick Batkoski, who singled to drive in two to tie the score at 3-3.
Hathaway, the Huskies' All-America catcher from Vancouver, Wash. (Columbia River), hit an 0-1 pitch the opposite way to right field to end the game in the 11th. It was his first home run of the season. Tyler Mach and Isaacson each had two hits for the Huskies.
Gonzaga starter Ed Clelland allowed three runs on seven hits over seven innings for no decision. Gonzaga was held to only five hits on the day. Brad Welker's eighth-inning double was the Zags only extra-base hit.
The Huskies and Zags finish up the three-game series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
