SEATTLE - Three eighth-inning solo homers lifted the Washington baseball team to a 6-3 win over Loyola Marymount Saturday in the second game of a three-game series at Husky Ballpark.
Washington (9-4-1) entered the inning with the game tied 3-3, but with one out, catcher Aaron Hathaway broke the tie with an opposite field homer to right, his second of the year. After an out, left fielder Zach Clem and first baseman Kyle Larsen hit home runs to tack on some insurance.
Husky closer Will Fenton (2-1), who entered the game in the eighth, threw two scoreless innings for the victory. He struck out four. LMU reliever Kyle Huddy (1-1), who surrendered all three of the UW homers, suffered the loss as the Lions fell to 11-6.
Washington took advantage of an LMU error to open the scoring with a run in the third. With two outs and no one on base, catcher Aaron Hathaway bunted. Third baseman Kyle Mura's throw to first was in time, but first baseman Jonathan Oller dropped the ball. After Hathaway stole second, freshman Matt Lane singled through the left side to drive in the run.
The Lions responded with an unearned run of their own in the fourth. With runners at first and second and one out, Clint McGill grounded sharply up the middle. UW second baseman Greg Isaacson got the hard grounder, but the ball went off his glove and rolled away, allowing Kyle Mura to score, tying the game at 1-1.
UW sophomore starter Keaton Everitt, who had lost in his two most recent starts after winning his first two, was relieved in the fifth after loading the bases with two outs on a hit batter and two walks. After freshman Kyle Parker came on in relief, Mura singled to left field, driving in two to give Loyola a 3-1 lead.
Everitt finished the day having allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits.
Washington tied the game with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. In the fifth, freshman DH Matt Lane doubled and scored on a single from Clem. In the seventh, Taylor Johnson's sacrifice fly tied it, driving in Clem, who'd singled to start the inning.
Clem finished 3-for-5 while Larsen was 3-for-4. Mura had three hits to pace the Lions.
The Huskies and Lions close out the three-game series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
