TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman ace Tim Lincecum pitched the Washington baseball team to an 11-1 win over No. 9 Arizona State Friday night at Packard Stadium in the Huskies' Pac-10 opening game.
Lincecum (3-0) worked a career-high seven innings, holding the Sun Devils to one run on six hits while walking three and striking out eight. The Huskies improved to 14-6-1 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10 while ASU fell to 20-6 and 1-3.
The UW notched 13 hits, including three homers, in the game.
Washington scored a run in the first when Greg Isaacson walked, stole second and scored when freshman DH Matt Lane blooped a single ovev the second baseman's head and into right field. In the second, Kyle Larsen walked to lead off and John Otness crushed a his team-leading sixth homer of the season well over the left-center field wall, giving the UW a 3-0 lead.
The Huskies tacked on two more in the fourth. After Otness doubled, Ben Johnson reached on a fielding error by ASU second baseman Josh Asanovich, putting runners at first and third. Taylor Johnson followed with a blast to deep center. The ball was caught at the fence by Colin Curtis, but it was enough to send home Otness. Brent Lillibridge followed with a two-out double to right and Ben Johnson scored from first base, giving UW a 5-0 lead.
ASU, which had managed only a two-out single through the first three innings, threatened in the fourth. Lincecum issued two walks and a single around a pair of strikeout and faced Joe Persichina with bases loaded and two outs, but Persichina took a called third strike to get Lincecum off the hook.
The Devils did, however, break through for a run in the fifth. With one down, Seth Dhaenens doubled and Dustin Pedroia reached on an infield single. Travis Buck followed with a sacrifice fly to send home Dhaenens, but during the next at bat, Pedroia was thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning with the Huskies in front, 5-1.
In the seventh, with Isaacson aboard on a single, UW left fielder Zach Clem moved into a share of the team lead with his sixth homer of the year, lining a shot over the fence in left-center, upping the Huskies' edge to 7-1.
The UW added another in the eighth on an Isaacson sacrifice fly and Larsen hammered a long homer to right in the ninth, his fourth. Later in the ninth, Lillibridge doubled down the left-field line, his second of the game, to plate two more.
Lillibridge and Lane each finished the game with three hits while Lillibridge also had two RBI.
ASU junior starter Jason Urquidez (6-2) suffered his second loss of the year as he allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits over four and one-third innings.
The Huskies and Devils continue with the series with games Saturday and Sunday, both at noon (PST). Both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
