OSU Beats UW, 7-4, In Non-League Game

SEATTLE - Oregon State starter Jonah Nickerson struck out 10 Husky batters in five innings and left fielder Chris Campos went 3-for-5 with a homer and three runs batted in to lead the Beavers to a 7-4 win over the Washington baseball team in a non-conference game Monday night at Husky Ballpark.
Nickerson, a freshman righty from Oregon City, Ore., allowed only one UW run on three hits and walked one to improve to 3-0. Oregon State upped its record to 20-11 while Huskies, who have dropped three of their last four games, fell to 19-11-1 on the season.
Oregon State struck first, scoring four runs in the second inning. The Beavers loaded the bases on a double from Aaron Mathews, a walk to Shea McFeely and a single from Andy Jenkins. Second baseman Chad Schroeder walked to force in a run and designated hitter Mike Lissman followed with a two-run single to left. After a walk to Paul Richie, Chris Campos made it 4-0 when his single brought home Schroeder.
After the Huskies got a run back on an RBI single from Nick Batkoski in the bottom of the second, Mathews started the top of the third by belting his fourth homer of the year off the scoreboard in left field, stretching the OSU lead back to four runs at 5-1.
With freshman reliever Jordan Ponzoha on in place of starter Richie Lentz to begin the fourth, the Beavers added to their tally. Mike Lissman singled and stole second and, after an out, Campos followed with his seventh homer of the season.
Nickerson ran into trouble in the fifth, loading the bases with one out on a single and two hit batters. He got out of the jam, however, striking out Brent Lillibridge and Kyle Larsen.
Washington got to Beaver reliever Kevin Gunderson for a pair of runs in the seventh. Catcher Ben Johnson was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a wild pitch and second baseman Greg Isaacson was also hit by a pitch and came around on an RBI single from Larsen.
The Huskies continued to come back in the eighth when Zach Clem was hit by a pitch and scored on a Batkoski double, cutting the OSU lead to 7-4. However, Isaacson, representing the tying run with two runners aboard, flied out to the warning track in center field to end the threat.
Lentz (3-3) allowed five runs on seven hits over three innings of work to suffer the loss. Ponzoha, who gave up two runs on the Campos homer in the fourth, faced the minimum over the next five and one-third innings, allowing no hits and a walk over that span.
Batkoski went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Husky offense. Clem was 2-for-3.
The Huskies and Beavers play another non-Pac-10 game Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. This Friday through Sunday, the UW travels to face Georgia Tech for a three-game series in Atlanta. Friday and Saturday, game time is 7:00 p.m. EDT (4:00 p.m. PDT) and Sunday's game begins at 1:00 p.m. EDT (10:00 a.m. PDT). All three games will air live on KKNW AM-1150, with Sunday's finale airing on tape delay beginning at noon Pacific time.
