SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team posted six runs in the first inning and coasted to a 6-1 win over Arizona Friday night at Husky Ballpark to open a three-game, Pac-10 series.
The Huskies improved to 22-13-1 overall and 6-4 in the Pac-10, good for second place in the league. The Wildcats, who entered the night in a tie for second along with the UW and USC, dropped to 21-16-1 on the season and 5-5 in conference play.
With one out in the bottom of the first, the Huskies loaded the bases on a walk and two singles. Junior shortstop Nick Batkoski walked to force in the UW's first run and Matt Lane drilled a double to the gap in right-center to clear the bases.
After a second out, John Otness doubled to score Lane and then came across himself on a Greg Isaacson single, staking the Dawgs to a 6-0 lead.
Arizona tallied its lone run in the fourth when left fielder Nick Hundley walked and eventually crossed the plate on UW freshman Kyle Parker's second wild pitch of the inning. The Wildcats went on to leave a total of 13 runners on base, a season high.
Parker (2-1), who struggled with his control, nonetheless went five innings to get the victory. He allowed only one hit and one run, but walked eight and threw three wild pitches to go with his three strikeouts. David Dowling allowed four hits and no runs over four innings to get the save.
Arizona junior starter Koley Kolberg (6-3) settled down after the six-run first and ended up going the distance, allowing only one hit and no runs over his next seven innings of work.
Husky left fielder Zach Clem was the only player in the game with more than one hit, finishing 2- for-3 with a run scored and a walk to go with two singles.
The Huskies and Wildcats continue the series with a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday. Admission is free. Sunday, the series wraps up with a 1:00 p.m. start.
