CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior catcher Paul Richie went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three runs batted in to lead the Oregon State baseball team to a 7-3 win over No. 21 Washington Friday evening in the first of a three-game, Pac-10 series at Goss Stadium.
The win was the eighth in nine games for the Beavers (27-12 overall, 7-6 in the Pac-10) and broke the Huskies' five-game win streak. Washington, which has lost all four meetings with OSU this season (the first three were non-conference games), fell to 24-14-1 and 8-5 in the Pac-10, still good for sole possession of second place.
OSU ace Jake Postlewait improved to 9-2 with the victory, allowing three runs on five hits over five and one-third innings. Husky freshman starter Kyle Parker (2-2) allowed four runs on four hits over six innings to suffer the loss.
Washington got out to a lead early, scoring a run in the top of the second when Aaron Hathaway singled and eventually came around on a bases-loaded, two-out walk to Brent Lillibridge.
OSU answered with a run in the bottom of the second when Cole Gillespie led off with a line-drive triple to center. Gillespie scored when Shea McFeely swung at a wild pitch for strike three and the ball got to the backstop allowing the runner to score. The Beavers went on to load the bases with one out, but Paul Richie grounded into a double play to keep the 1-1 tie in tact.
In the third, however, the Beavers broke the tie. Mike Lissman reached on an infield single before moving to second on a groundout and to third on a fly ball. He scored on a wild pitch to give Oregon State a 2-1 lead.
OSU stretched the lead to 4-1 in the fifth when Jacoby Ellsbury singled to lead off and Richie followed with his third home run of the season.
The Huskies rallied in the sixth, knocking Postlewait from the game. Postlewait issued a walk and hit a batter to open the inning before UW freshman Tyler Mach doubled off the wall in left. The double scored Hathaway from second base but Nick Batkoski was thrown out at the plate, trying to score from first.
With Nathan Pendley on in relief, Ben Johnson singled to put runners at the corners and Greg Isaacson followed with another single to plate Johnson. Jared Sanders replaced Pendley and got Lillibridge to pop up and John Otness to ground out to end the threat with OSU still on top, 4-3.
Washington had a chance to tie the game in the seventh. With Hathaway aboard on a single and two outs, Batkoski lined a double to the corner in right. When the throw to the infield was made towards second base rather than the plate, Hathaway tried to score, but for the second time in as many innings, shortstop Tony Calderon's relay throw gunned down the runner at the plate.
OSU added to its advantage in the seventh, scoring three off of UW senior reliever Trent Baysinger, who entered the game to start the inning. Baysinger hit Ellsbury with a pitch to lead off the inning and Richie drove him home with a double. An RBI single from Lissman and a run-scoring triple from Aaron Mathews followed in the inning, extending the Beavers lead to 7-3.
The Huskies and Beavers continue the series Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in front of what is expected to be a capacity crowd.
