UW Comes Back To Beat USC, 8-6, In 10 Innings

LOS ANGELES - After allowing six runs in the bottom of the first, the 13th-ranked Washington baseball team held USC scoreless the rest of the way and came back to beat the Trojans, 8-6 in 10 innings, Friday night in the first game of a three-game, Pac-10 series at Dedeaux Field.
After scoring two in the ninth to tie the game at 6-6, the Huskies pushed across a run in the 10th on a two-out bloop single from right fielder Taylor Johnson. Matt Lane led off the 10th with a single. Pinch runner Nick Burnham then moved to second on a bunt and, after a fly ball for the second out, Johnson fisted a full-count pitch into shallow center to send home Burnham. An RBI single from Greg Isaacson pushed across an eighth run.
UW freshman Tim Lincecum (8-1) struck out two in his one inning of work, the ninth, to pick up the win. UW junior closer Will Fenton fanned two in the bottom of the 10th to record his seventh save of the season. USC reliever Austin Miller (0-1) suffered the loss.
The win moved the Huskies into a tie for the Pac-10 lead in terms of games behind. Washington improved its record to 31-15-1 overall and 13-6 in the Pac-10, tied atop the standings with idle Stanford (38-8, 11-4), which begins a series at Arizona Saturday. USC fell to 21-26, 7-9 in the conference.
USC, which last played a game on May 3, showed little rust in the first inning, scoring six runs, including five with two outs. With Michael Moon already in on a passed ball, the Trojans got an RBI single from Jon Brewster and then three straight walks, the last two of which forced in runs. Moon, the USC leadoff man, singled in his second at bat of the inning, driving in two to cap the big first inning.
Washington began to chip away at the USC lead when sophomore left fielder Zach Clem led off the fourth with his 11th homer of the year, driving a pitch over the center field wall. In the fifth, the Huskies got two more on a two-run double from Brent Lillibridge. Lillibridge moved to third on a wild pitch with no outs, but didn't score as USC ace Ian Kennedy got two infield popups and a strikeout to end the inning with the Trojans still on top, 6-3.
In the seventh, the UW got back-to-back singles from John Otness and Johnson to open the inning. After an out, Kennedy was relieved by Michael Friedman, who struck out the only batter he faced. With Clayton Wentworth on to pitch, Clem singled to right to drive in Otness. Kyle Larsen followed with a line drive to right that seemed destined to send home another run, but Cyle Hankerd made a sliding grab to end the inning with USC in front, 6-4.
Washington went down in order in the eighth, but put the pressure on again in the ninth. Otness led off with a single and Johnson walked to open the ninth. Lillibridge forced Johnson at second on a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with one out. USC southpaw Josh Rummonds came on to face left-handed hitting Isaacson, who belted a 2-2 pitch for a double down the left-field line to drive in both runners, tying the score at 6-6.
After giving up the six runs in the first, UW freshman starter Kyle Parker held the Trojans scoreless over the next four innings before giving way to Trent Baysinger to start the sixth. Baysinger allowed only a hit in his three innings of relief.
Saturday's UW-USC game begins at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday's at 1:00 p.m. Both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
