Knutson Ties Record As UW Beats L-C State, 8-4

SEATTLE - Head coach Ken Knutson tied the Washington wins record as the 13th-ranked Husky baseball team beat NAIA powerhouse Lewis-Clark State, 8-4, Tuesday evening at Husky Ballpark.
The win was the 422nd career victory for Knutson, the Huskies' 12th-year head coach, tying the school record set by his former coach, Bob MacDonald, who went 422-322-7 in 17 seasons (1977-92) as Washington's head man.
The win also snapped the Warriors' 22-game winning streak, dropping L-C State's season mark to 50-8. Washington improved to 33-16-1 on the year.
Sophomore starter Keaton Everitt (5-2) earned the win for the Huskies. The 6-foot-7 righty from Kirkland's Juanita High allowed two runs on five hits while fanning four in six innings. Freshman reliever Richie Lentz worked the final three innings to notch the first save of his career.
The Huskies jumped on L-C State ace Kyle Allen in the first inning, posting four runs thanks in part to an error and three wild pitches. With Brent Lillibridge aboard on a single, Greg Isaacson struck out, but the third strike was in the dirt and catcher Tyler Best's throw to first was high. Zach Clem followed with a single to drive in one and after a groundout, Isaacson scored on a wild pitch.
After a walk, John Otness singled to send home a third run and freshman Tyler Mach notched an RBI single to make it 4-0 after one inning. In the second, Otness drove in two with a single to increase the lead to 6-0. Otness finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.
L-C State got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Justin Fuller, who walked to lead off, scored on a wild pitch and Josh Celigoy singled to drive in Jose Rodriguez, cutting the Husky advantage to 6-2.
The Huskies added another tally in the seventh inning when Kyle Larsen doubled and scored on a single from Aaron Hathaway. In the eighth, an RBI groundout from Clem drove in Taylor Johnson to cap the UW scoring. L-C State rallied for two in the ninth on an RBI double from Anthony Slagle and a sacrifice fly from Fuller.
Allen (7-2) took the loss for the Warriors, surrendering six runs (four earned) on six hits over one and two-thirds innings. L-C State reliever Mike Causey entered the game in the second and retired the first 11 batters he faced before a one-out walk in the sixth. Causey finished the game having allowed two unearned runs on three hits over his six and one-thirds.
Fuller, the Warriors' second baseman, extended his school-record hitting streak to 30 games with a leadoff double in the fourth inning.
Incidentally, Clem, the Huskies' sophomore left fielder from Burlington, broke a UW single- season record when he was hit by a pitch for the 20th time this season.
This Friday through Sunday, Washington closes out the Pac-10 slate with a three-game series vs. UCLA before playing host to UC Irvine the final weekend of the regular season, May 28-30.
