UW Knocks Off No. 1 Stanford, 3-2, In 10

SEATTLE - Nick Batkoski drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning as the 16th-ranked Washington baseball team knocked off No. 1 Stanford, 3-2, Friday night in the first game of big, Pac-10 series at Husky Ballpark.
The win moved the Huskies (27-14-1 overall, 11-5 in the Pac-10) to within a half-game of the first-place Cardinal (36-7, 10-3).
Stanford reliever Jeff Stimpson (1-2) came on to open the 10th and hit UW leadoff man Brent Lillibridge with a pitch. After a successful sacrifice from Greg Isaacson, Stanford third baseman Adam Sorgi made a diving stop on a hard grounder from Zach Clem, but his throw to first was errant, putting runners at first and third with one out.
Another Cardinal reliever, Blake Holler, came on and hit Kyle Larsen with a pitch to load the bases before Batkoski, a junior from Federal Way poked a bloop single to right to score Lillibridge from third.
UW freshman starter Kyle Parker went eight innings, the longest outing of the season by a Husky pitcher this season, but didn't figure in the decision as he left with the score tied 2-2. Parker allowed only five hits, two runs and three walks while striking out five.
Freshman Tim Lincecum (6-1), expected to start Sunday vs. Stanford, got the win, throwing two scoreless innings of relief.
Cardinal ace Mark Romanczuk went nine innings for Stanford, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking two, one intentionally.
Both teams broke through for a run in the first inning. Stanford scored when John Mayberry, Jr. belted a two-out single to score Chris Minaker, who had singled, from second base.
In the bottom of the first, the Huskies answered as Clem reached on a two-out double and scored on another double from Batkoski.
Stanford manufactured a run in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Danny Putnam singled and Mayberry walked to begin the inning. After a Donny Lucy bunt moved both runners up, Putnam scored when Brian Hall grounded to second.
Washington tied the score in the sixth when Larsen hit his 10th home run of the year, a one-out solo shot to right field.
The Huskies threatened to take their first lead in the bottom of the seventh. Singles by John Otness and Aaron Hathaway, a sacrifice bunt from Taylor Johnson and an intentional walk to Lillibridge loaded the bases with one out. Romanczuk struck out Isaacson and Clem followed with a hard grounder that looked destined for a hit. Sorgi, however, made a diving stop and then recovered to throw out Clem by a step, ending the inning.
The Huskies and Cardinal play Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live both on television (Fox Sports Northwest) and radio (KKNW AM-1150).
