WAILEA, HAWAII -- Washington women's tennis completed competition at the three-day Wailea Classic held at the Wailea Tennis Club in Maui, Hawaii, Sunday, with senior Stephanie Svanfeldt and freshman Melinda Wong picking up singles wins and junior Monika Kolbovic and sophomore Allison Rainey winning their doubles contest.
The tournament, which featured round-robin style individual play between student-athletes from UW, Oregon and Sacramento State, included one round of singles and doubles in the final day.
In singles, Svanfeldt defeated Irena Taranenko of Sacramento State, 6-3, 6-2 and Wong posted a three-set comeback win over Svetlana Primenova also of Sacramento State, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Huskies Tara Simpson and Dinka Hadzic lost their singles contests to a pair of players from rival Oregon. Simpson fell to Anna Powaska, 6-0, 6-4, while Hadzic suffered a tough three-set defeat to Dominika Dieskova, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles, Kolbovic and Rainey edged the Sacramento State duo of Rita Karnaukhova and Karina Jarlkaganova, 9-8. The other Husky doubles team of Hadzic and freshman Victoria Brymer fell to Oregon's Dieskova and Cecilia Olivos, 8-6.
Over the three-day tournament, Hadzic led the way with a 3-1 record in singles play, while the UW doubles team of Hadzic and Brymer, and Rainey and Kolbovic went 2-1.
The Huskies open dual play hosting BYU, Sat., Jan. 21, at 12 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
