SEATTLE - Zach Clem went 3-for-3 with his 15th homer and three RBI and starter Kyle Parker threw five shutout innings as the Washington baseball team beat Brigham Young, 12-1, in the final game of a three-game, non-conference series at a rainy Husky Ballpark.
The win gave the Huskies (24-14) a two-games-to-one series victory over the Cougars (15-20).
Parker (3-0) allowed only two hits while walking three and striking out four for the win. BYU starter Brandon Christiansen (3-3) allowed four earned runs over three and two- thirds innings for the loss.
Washington scored the game's first run in the second. After Matt Lane reached on a single, Clem doubled off the wall, sending Lane to third. Ryan Anderson followed with a safety squeeze bunt to plate Lane, giving the UW a 1-0 lead.
In the third, Matt Hague reached on an infield single and took second on an errant throw. Curt Rindal then doubled down the left-field line, scoring Hague to make it 2-0.
The following inning, Washington added to its lead. After a hit batter and a single put runners at first and third, another successful bunt from Bradley Boyer drove in Clem. Later in the fourth, Danny Cox and Hague knocked back-to-back RBI singles to stake the Huskies with a 5-0 advantage.
In the fifth, Clem, the Huskies' senior left fielder, drove a long home run into a stiff wind in left-center field, his Pac-10-leading 15th of the season, to make it 6-0.
BYU's Ben Saylor got the Cougars on the board in the sixth when he connected for a solo homer off of Husky reliever Nick Hagadone, Saylor's eighth of the year.
In the bottom of the sixth, the UW got three more runs on an RBI hit from Hague and a two-run single from Clem, increasing the Huskies lead to 9-1. Washington tacked on three more in the seventh on an RBI single from Cox and a two-run single from reserve catcher D.J. Neyens.
Cox finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs batted in while Hague was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Saylor, who went 2-for-4, was the only Cougar with more than one hit.
Next up for the Huskies is a non-conference game Monday at Portland at 3:00 p.m. Live audio for that game will air on gohuskies.com. Then, next Friday through Sunday, the UW faces USC at Dedeaux Field. All three games vs. the Trojans will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
