SEATTLE - Tim Lincecum became the winningest pitcher in Husky history Friday night, notching his 28th career victory as the Washington baseball team beat Arizona, 7- 5, in a Pac-10 Conference series opener at Husky Ballpark.
Lincecum, who leads the nation in wins with his 10-2 record, broke a 26-year old mark with his 28th career victory, surpassing Mike Smith's record of 27, set between 1978 and 1980. Lincecum threw eight innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out 11.
Washington improved to 29-15 overall and 7-6 in the Pac-10 Conference with the victory.
The Wildcats (19-21, 5-8) scored the game's first run in the second when right fielder Bill Rhinehart led off the inning with his third home run of the season.
The Huskies replied with two in the bottom of the second. After two quick outs, Ryan Anderson doubled and scored on a Matt Stevens single. After an error put runners at first and second, a single from Brett Kaluza sent home Stevens to put the UW on top, 2-1.
In the top of the third, Arizona tied it at 2-2 when Jason Donald singled to drive in Brad Boyer.
In the bottom of the third, Husky sophomore Matt Hague reached when he grounded a ball of the pitcher's glove and then advanced to third on a pair of throwing errors after the deflection. After a hit batter put runners at the corners, Hague scored on a fielder's choice groundout by Curt Rindal.
Arizona had runners at second and third with two outs in the fifth when Wildcats second baseman Brad Boyer stole home to tie the score at 3-3. In the bottom of the fifth, Kaluza led off with a triple and put the Huskies back on top, 4-3, when he scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt Hague.
Washington upped the lead to 7-3 with three in the seventh. After Stevens led off the inning with his 13th home run of the season, the Huskies got two more later in the frame on a two-out, two run double from Zach Clem.
In the eighth, Arizona scored an unearned run and, in the ninth, Colt Sedbrook singled to drive in a fifth run, but closer Richie Lentz, who'd entered the game to start the ninth, held on to pick up the save.
Arizona starter Preston Guilmet (2-6) suffered the loss. He allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits over seven innings.
Kaluza led the Husky hitters, going 3-for-3 with two runs while Stevens had two hits. Boyer led Arizona with a pair of hits.
