TEMPE, Ariz. - Tim Lincecum ran his string of consecutive scoreless innings to 28 and two-thirds, striking out 12 in his second consecutive two-hit, complete-game shutout as the Washington baseball team blanked No. 13 Arizona State, 8-0, Friday in the first of a three-game Pac-10 series at Packard Stadium.
Lincecum, a junior from Liberty High, moved to 7-2 with the victory. Both hits he surrendered were doubles. He walked four and hit one batter.
With his 12 strikeouts, Lincecum now has 109 on the year, marking the third straight season that he has reached the 100-K plateau. Aside from Lincecum, only two other UW pitchers have struck out 100 or more in a season.
Lincecum also became only the third pitcher in Pac-10 history to strike out 400 batters in a career. With an 401, he's 48 short of conference record-holder Rik Currier, who fanned 449 in his four seasons at USC (1998-2001).
Husky first baseman Curt Rindal, who went 0-for-3 and was hit by a pitch in each of his last two plate appearances, saw his hitting streak end at 21 games.
Washington (22-11 overall, 4-3 Pac-10) scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning. With Danny Cox and Bradley Boyer aboard on two-out singles, Jake Rife grounded a ball under the glove of ASU second baseman Eric Sogard for an error that allowed Cox to score.
In the fourth, the Huskies took advantage of two errors from Devils shortstop Joe Persichina to score three runs. With Zach Clem at second with one down, Matt Stevens reached on a Persichina error. Cox, then next hitter, then grounded what looked to be an inning-ending double play ball to short, but Persichina was once again unable to field it cleanly, allowing Clem to score.
After a strikeout, Rife followed with a single, chopped over the third baseman, to drive in the two runners to give the Huskies a 4-0 lead.
In the fifth, Clem lined his league-leading 14th home run of the season down the left-field line to increase the lead to 5-0. In the eighth, the UW added a sixth run on a Boyer sacrifice fly. In the ninth, Washington used two more ASU errors to tack on two more runs. The Devils finished the game with six errors, all leading to Husky runs.
ASU starter Pat Bresnehan (3-2) took the loss, despite allowing only one earned run over his five innings. The Devils dropped to 23-10 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10 with the loss.
Saturday, the Huskies and Sun Devils play at noon. The game will air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150 and, Monday at noon, on tape delay on FSN.
