SEATTLE - Led by five shutout innings from starter Nick Hagadone and a seven-run seventh inning, the Washington baseball team handed Portland an 8-1 loss in a non- conference game Monday evening at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies improved to 32-19 on the season while the Pilots dropped to 13-31.
Hagadone (2-2) allowed just two hits over his five innings of work to pick up the win. He walked three and struck out a pair. Pilots starter Austin Dirkx (1-4), who held the UW to just one run on four hits through the first six innings, suffered the loss. He ended up allowing three runs on five hits over six and one-third innings.
Washington's first hit of the game came in the fourth inning when senior right fielder Cory Rickard belted a double to the left-center gap. After a second out, freshman shortstop Danny Cox laced a single up the middle to send Rickard in, giving the Huskies the game's first lead at 1-0.
In the seventh, the Huskies broke the game open with seven runs. Center fielder Jesse Ferguson, in his first Husky start, walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double from designated hitter Matt Hague.
With Sean Sargent on in relief of Dirkx, Curt Rindal walked and Zach Clem followed with a double down the left-field line, scoring Michael Burgher, who ran for Hague. Pinch hitter Trevor Petersen's grounder to third went off the glove of third baseman Danny Meier, allowing two more to score to increase the lead to 5-0.
After a second out, third baseman Matt Stevens belted a three-run homer, his 16th of the season, to right field.
Meier broke up the Huskies' shutout bid when he led off the eighth inning with his seventh home run of the year.
The two-game series vs. Portland concludes Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Live video and live stats for the game will be available at gohuskies.com. This weekend, the Huskies play host to Stanford in a three-game, Pac-10 series.
