POSTGAME NOTES
Game 5: Washington 9, Northwestern 0 (5 Innings)
Washington improved to 42-17 on the year (15-12 all-time in the College World Series) while Northwestern fell to 51-12 (33-22 in the WCWS).
The victory marked the first time UW has won multiple games at the WCWS since 1999 when the Huskies finished runner-up to UCLA.
The five-inning 9-0 run-rule victory marked the first run rule in WCWS play since Fresno State defeated Michigan 8-0 in 1998. Tonight's nine-run decision marked the largest margin of victory since 1995 when Arizona defeated Cal State Fullerton 11-0.
Washington moved into a tie for fifth with Cal State Fullerton in all-time NCAA Tournament wins at 59.
The Huskies scored five fifth-inning runs before Northwestern recorded an out. Including tonight's contest, UW is outscoring opponents 52-to-17 in the fifth frame this year.
Washington's six fifth-inning runs were the most in a WCWS frame since UCLA scored six in the fourth inning against Stanford in 2004. Twelve UW batters came to the plate in the fifth tonight.
The Huskies' nine runs marked their most in WCWS play since scoring nine against Cal in 1996.
The 9-0 decision marked Northwestern's worst defeat since falling to Kansas 11-1 on Feb. 7, 2004.
The Huskies improved to 31-9 this year when scoring first (they scored two runs in the third inning for the second consecutive game).
Washington's Danielle Lawrie struck out 11 hitters tonight, increasing her current single-season school record to 442.
Washington's Ashley Charters became the first leadoff hitter in this year's WCWS to record a hit in the first inning.
