WINDERMERE, Fla. - The third-ranked Husky men's golf team struggled in the first round of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, shooting a combined 20-over-par 308. Washington is tied for 12th out of 15 teams competing at Isleworth Country Club outside of Orlando.
"The course is really challenging and we didn't handle it very well," said Husky head coach Matt Thurmond. "We made lots of good shots, but we made too many big mistakes today. Hopefully, we'll be better tomorrow and the next day. We still have a strong comeback in us."
Stanford got three rounds of under-par golf, including a 4-under 68 from co-leader Steve Ziegler, to lead after the first round at 289.
The Huskies, who teed off from the 10th hole, were led by junior Tze Huang Choo. Choo is tied for 23rd after he shot a 3-over-par 75, which included only one birdie and four bogeys.
All-Americans Nick Taylor and Richard Lee each finished the day at 5-over 77 and are tied for 33rd. Taylor had an especially roller-coaster round, as he had five birdies on the day - two more than the rest of the team combined. But, along with the birdies, Taylor uncharacteristically counted three double-bogeys and four bogeys.
Lee was 1-over after his first nine, but ballooned to 5-over after counting four bogeys on the back.
Jens Bracht, competing in his first fall tournament of the season, shot a 7-over 79, while senior Chris Killmer was +11 on the day.
The Huskies will tee off for round two starting at 9:25 ET on the 10th tee.
