SEATTLE - No. 14 Cal (7-1-2, 3-0-0) scored twice in the first half as they went on to defeat the Huskies (7-4-1, 1-3-0) Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium, 4-1.
Senior Matt Van Houten (Portland, Ore.) scored his fourth goal of the season and the third of the weekend on a penalty kick in the 77th minute. Freshman Zach Portillos (Aurora, Colo.) was fouled in the box to set up the kick.
"Cal is on top of the league right now and we conceded some goals that helped their confidence at the wrong times," said head coach Dean Wurzberger. "Spencer (Richey) is young but he has a lot of promise. I think we were upset about falling behind early and we haven't conceded a penalty all year. Cal put a lot of pressure on us but I was satisfied that we fought back in the second half and made a game of it."
Cal's first goal came in the ninth minute as John Fitzpatrick headed the ball off of a corner kick by Tony Salciccia.
The second goal was scored by Salciccia on an assist by Davis Paul. He took the ball on the left side of the box and sent it to the right side of the net past a diving Richey.
The Golden Bears got a penalty kick of their own in the 67th minute as A.J. Soares got his fourth goal of the season.
Paul scored the fourth goal on an assist from Soares in the 71st minute.
Richey, a freshman keeper for UW from Seattle, Wash., made two saves. His record is now 3-2-0.
Washington took control of the ball in the second half and took eight shots. UW had 14 total shots, led by juniors Brent Richards and Jamie Finch each with two on goal.
The Huskies will play just one match next week against Oregon State at 7 p.m. on Oct. 15.
"Cal is a good team, they have been on a role," said Van Houten. "It was a tough game for us. We let an early goal in which hurt us but we have Oregon State next week and we will come back."
