
Three Homers Lead Gonzaga Past UW

SEATTLE - The Gonzaga baseball team used three home runs to lead the way to an 11-1 win over Washington Tuesday evening at Husky Ballpark.
Gonzaga improved to 14-27-1 on the season, snapping a seven-game losing streak with the victory. Washington fell to 20-19.
Senior second baseman Doug Cherry went 4-for-4 with a double for the Huskies.
Bulldogs reliever Mark Phillips (2-3), who came on in the third inning in place of starter Ryan Carpenter, picked up the win, pitching four and two-thirds scoreless innings.
UW starter Adrian Gomez (3-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season, allowing four runs over three and two-thirds.
In the bottom of the first, Cherry reached on a single, took second on a ball in the dirt and then scored on a two-out single from catcher Pierce Rankin, staking the UW to a 1-0 lead.
Gonzaga struck back in the third as second baseman Sean Wilson hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot into the left-field bullpen. Later in the inning, Drew Heid doubled and Mark Castellitto hit his 10th home run of the year, giving the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.
In the fifth, Gonzaga added two more as Ernesto Ortiz walked and eventually scored on a sacrafice fly and Heid doubled and scored on a Castellitto single. The following inning, Tyler Chism doubled to center and then scored on a bloop double from Ortiz, making it a 7-1 Bulldogs lead.
In the seventh, the Zags loaded the bases on a walk, a double and an intentional walk. With two outs, Clayton Eslick came on as a pinch hitter and went the opposite way for a grand slam, his first homer of the year.
The Huskies and Bulldogs square off again Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. This weekend, the UW plays host to No. 21 Stanford. Friday's game at Husky Ballpark starts at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, the game will be played at Safeco Field, starting at 6:30 p.m. Sunday's game has been moved up to a 12:00 p.m. start.
