LA QUINTA, Calif. -- Spurred by the 5-under 67 from freshman Cheng-Tsung Pan, the Washington men's golf team is second after two round of the The Prestige at PGA WEST in La Quinta, Calif.
The Huskies combined to shoot 11-under 277 on Monday to move 19-under 557 overall. They are five shots behind leaders Oregon, who blistered the Greg Norman designed course in day two by shooting 15-under 273.
"We picked up a couple shots at the end to get within five, which is what I really wanted to do," said Husky Head Coach Matt Thurmond. "I wanted to keep them (the Ducks) within range going into tomorrow."
Washington will enter the final round with a one-stroke lead over third-place San Diego State and a five shot advantage over top-ranked Stanford.
The Huskies saw four of their five golfers shoot under par during the round. Besides Pan's 67, junior Chris Williams shot 69, Charlie Hughes shot 70 and Trevor Simsby fired a 71.

Pan's 67 consisted of six birdies and just one bogey. His score tied for the second lowest of the day.
"He's had two really awesome rounds here," Thurmond said. "He is just so steady. He's been working on his putting and he is making some more right now."
"I call him the Silent Assasin," Thurmond continued, "because he just quietly goes about his business and is so mentally strong."
The freshman, competing in just his second collegiate tournament, is 8-under 136 overall and tied for third in the tournament.
Next behind Pan in the standings is Hughes (T14th, 4-under 140). He has notched consecutive rounds of 70.
Cory McElyea, who led Washington in the first round and was tied for fourth entering Monday's action, was the only Husky over par. He shot a respectable 1-over 73 and dropped 13 places in the standings to 17th at 3-under 141.
Williams and Simsby each shot the exact opposite side over par in Sunday's round to reach even par 144 on Monday. They are tied for 35th.
Low round honors went Oregon's Eugene Wong, who went into the clubhouse after an 8-under 64. His round propelled him into the tournament lead at 10-under with first-round leader Spencer Fletcher of Stanford.
Play wraps up starting Tuesday at 7:30 a.m., with players teeing off from both holes No. 1 and 10.
